Needed: Volunteers to Assist Homeless

December 9, 2007

Out of the Cold offers dinner and overnight shelter to homeless people on “Wednesdays and all other nights deemed as cold”.

Volunteers are desperately needed. There are three shifts.

9pm-1230am

  • cleaning up from dinner
  • monitoring, so guests are and fell safe (there is a ‘volunteer captain’, Neil, who deals with any and all medical needs or disruptions). This could include visiting, if someone is not sleeping; visiting with other volunteers; reading.

12 (midnight) – 630am

  • monitoring, so guests are and fell safe (there is a ‘volunteer captain’, Neil, who deals with any and all medical needs or disruptions). This could include visiting, if someone is not sleeping; visiting with other volunteers; reading.

6am-830am (8 people minimum)

  • This is the busiest shift. Three people (those who would like to) prepare breakfast while the other five clean up by spraying and stacking mattresses, bagging sheets and blankets for laundering, sweeping, mopping or vacuuming, and cleaning the bathrooms (so that St Paul’s is spic and span for their daytime activities)

There is also a need for “back up Volunteer Captains” to relieve Neil in weeks with lots of cold days.

Out of the Cold is operated by the St Vincent de Paul Society and out of St Paul’s Cathedral (4th & Nicola). For more information or to volunteer, please call Ron at 318-4704.

Donations of blankets (that are easily washed, as they are laundered daily), sheets, pillows, toques, mitts, gloves and warm socks are also welcomed.
