Lately there seems to be a lot of hoopla about the 100 mile diet. Some are encouraging vegetarians to give up their attachment to beans grown in far off lands in favour of a locally raised lamb. They are saying it’s the more environmental way to go. While I think that buying local is important, I’m concerned about the potential impact of people deciding against a vegetarian diet thinking that it is the less environmental choice. Travel can have serious environmental impacts, from the tremendous amount of greenhouse gases released by airplanes to the consumption of resources upon reaching a destination. Awareness of this has given rise to the eco-tourism industry, but often eco-tours are offered as expensive packages that are out of reach to the average person. By now, many of us have heard of the 100-mile diet. For those who haven’t, it refers to eating foods grown within a 100-mile radius of wherever one lives. In Kamloops, most of the food available on grocery store shelves has traveled much further than 100 miles. You’d think it would cost more to transport food from faraway places than it would to stock locally produced foods. Unfortunately this isn’t the case. (more…)
