I once read a story about a woman watching a mouth who danced around a flame. In a final triumphant moment the woman saw the moth fly into the flame. Afterwards the moth became a separate and larger light than the previous flame.
This story symbolizes the determination the moth possessed and the sacrifice it had to endured to become a light. His whole being was sacrificed- his whole being created. I believe I have met a moth. (more…)

There is a great big old Ponderosa Pine tree that inspires me on a daily basis towards living more lightly and more fully. This big old mother of a tree lives on the border of a noisy traffic-ridden street and maybe that is why her presence is felt so strongly by me. Every day that I walk by her I stop to greet her. I think it was largely because of these daily greetings that I was finally able to quit smoking. (more…)

The community of Monteverde, Costa Rica has expanded my worldview. I spent an enriching month volunteering at their folk art gallery, experiencing a more conscientious way of life.American draft resistors founded Monteverde in the early 1950s. Abandoning most of their belongings, they said goodbye to friends and family. Facing many hardships while traveling by train, jeep, and oxcart, they made their way to Costa Rica’s largest cloud forest. (more…)
